The Atlas series of missile sites were constructed in the early 1960s and put into service during the Cold War. Because of the emergence of space and missile technology during the mid and late 1950s, the Atlas Project held significant importance in the country as it attained “national priority” status. There were six models of the Atlas Rocket, A-F, with the F series as the last one built in Albany, Texas.
Construction crews worked around the clock to complete the silo on its urgent timeline. At long last, the completed Atlas F silos measured 180 feet deep with a diameter of 52 feet.
On September 19, 1962, a flight-ready Atlas F, loaded with more than 30,000 gallons of volatile fuel, jammed in its launching silo and was set to explode. By the book, team members were to abort the mission. But 11 team members worked together for 7 ½ hours to drop the pressure to below critical levels and eliminated the danger of explosion. They saved the missile and their people, receiving Air Force commendations.
Trail Ranch visitors are able to experience the missile base site for themselves, as an original missile base building was converted into the lodge itself. You’ll be staying in a significant piece of American history!
