Our Purpose

REDISCOVER THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Trail Ranch Outfitters exists to create shared experiences through hunting, fishing, and exploration for every generation. When we founded Trail Ranch in 2010, we knew it had to be in Albany because of the people, the town, and excellent hunting grounds. Through the years, we’ve remained true to our values and the heart of our founders. Our commitment to conservation efforts and stewardship of the land has not changed.

Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or simply a beginner, we believe the outdoors has so much more to offer than what meets the eye. With Trail Ranch, you’ll develop new skills and an appreciation for nature at its finest.

Let us know when you’re ready for your next adventure, and we’ll help you rediscover the great outdoors.

Value #1

Get outside

For years, our driving force has been to encourage people to get outside and care about nature. At Trail Ranch Outfitters, we continue to create avenues for people to enjoy Albany and hunting with one another.

With this in mind, we believe hunting is more than just harvesting an animal. It is fellowship, it is conservation, and it is stewardship. Through outdoor experiences such as hunting and fishing, every individual that visits Trail Ranch will cultivate skills, integrity, and character that will extend beyond the hunt.

Join in on the adventure — it’s truly the experience of a lifetime.

Value #2

Do GOod together

Our lands and wild resources thrive when we properly care and invest in them. That’s why we believe in supporting organizations with these same values. Together, we can be the difference in conservation efforts.

Here at Trail Ranch, we stick to our guns when it comes to the preservation of the land and cultivating a stable environment for our animals. You’ll see this exhibited on all of our excursions. Our guides are here to help answer questions and explain the importance we place on these efforts.

Value #3

Start ‘em Young

Trail Ranch loves the next generation. If we can get kids outdoors, we’re over the moon! Seeing a child spot a painted bunting, catch their first bass, or harvest their first deer never gets old. Their enthusiasm reminds us of the wonder that adventuring outdoors brings.

We’d recommend dove or quail hunting as a good place to start for these youngsters! Taking your kids out on the land will help them with proper gun handling, hunting basics, and general appreciation for wildlife. Plus, they’ll create memories with family and friends that will last a lifetime.

Meet Our Guides

Justin Trail

Justin grew up bird hunting in the small farming towns east of Dallas in the early 80’s. He carried that passion for quail hunting behind good dogs to West Texas upon graduation from college and is still an avid quail hunter. He is also the president of Texas A&M University’s “Reversing the Quail Decline” Initiative. Justin has received numerous awards, including being named a Lone Star Land Steward in 2018 by Texas Parks & Wildlife for his conservation work on Trail Ranch.

Murrey McKee

Murrey grew up on a horse farm and loved the outdoors from an early age. In 2012, he started spending time at Trail Ranch and loved the way the people there practiced their foundational values. Murrey enjoys introducing first-timers to hunting and fishing as well as taking a seasoned vet on a stalk across the ranch. Most of his time is dedicated to leading the dove hunting operations for the Trail Ranch team.

Seth Harrington

Seth’s love of hunting and fishing began the moment he was old enough to tag along on trips with his dad. He grew up in northeast Colorado, mainly hunting upland birds and waterfowl. In his high school years, chasing waterfowl became a passion and still is to this day. In 2017, Seth began working at Trail Ranch as ranch foreman, and now big game hunting is another passion he’s added to his growing list.

Andrew Walla

Andrew and his family — a wife and two kids — all share a love of the outdoors. He has been hunting and fishing on the Texas coast for the past 25+ years of his life. Andrew especially enjoys bow hunting and sight casting to saltwater fish.

Jeff Wilhoit

Jeff is a native Texan who has spent his childhood hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking with his dad and brother. As he got older, he carried on that tradition with his own sons every chance he gets — and still does. Jeff is passionate about introducing people to the outdoors and has worked for Trail Ranch for 15 years. Jeff and his wife, Amy, live in Denton, Texas, and enjoy spending time in the mountains during their free time.

Zach Ehlers

Growing up in Seguin, Texas, Zach began hunting and fishing at about 3 years old. He always wanted to work outdoors, so he pursued a wildlife biology degree from Texas A&M University. Following college, he worked in the hunting business for eight years and eventually became a firefighter. However, he still guides hunts every fall because of how much he loves it, beginning his work for Trail Ranch in 2011. Zach lives in Junction, Texas, with his wife, Jessica, and two daughters, Bennett and Baylie.

Stephen Franke

Stephen’s love of the outdoors began in the deer stand with his father. He gained a further appreciation by spending summers at the Texas Parks and Wildlife headquarters. Stephen has explored many places — hiking the Tetons, fly fishing in the Rocky Mountains, deep sea fishing in Costa Rica, and backpacking with a Quechuan tribe in the Amazon. While attending Texas A&M University, he met his wife, Diana. Stephen looks forward to passing along his passion for the outdoors to their children: Luke, Harper, Noah, and Miles.

Michael Cotter

As an Albany native, Michael spent his high school summers working as the self-termed “wildlife manager” on the Trail ranches, giving him a greater appreciation for wildlife conservation and management. He attended Texas A&M University, started a hunting and fishing group, and met and married his wife, Meag. Michael enjoys spending his time hunting, fishing, serving on the advisory council of the TPW group Stewards of the Wild, and volunteering at a local refugee center with his wife.

Ray Deaton

Growing up in Dallas, Texas, Ray possessed a passion for the outdoors at an early age and has been associated with Trail Ranch since 2011. Ray graduated from Texas A&M University, earning a bachelor’s degree in agriculture economics. He is thrilled that his wife, Jennifer, and kids also enjoy and respect the outdoors. Ray has had the privilege to hunt, fish, and explore the outdoors throughout North America, South America, and South Africa and enjoys guiding clients in the woods, around the fields or even on the water.

Chris Austin

Being raised in the outdoors, Chris developed a passion for conservation efforts surrounding fish and wildlife as a youngster. He enjoys participating in projects that create, enhance and restore habitat for wildlife. Although he loves all types of hunting and fishing, fly-fishing and waterfowl hunting are two of his favorite activities. Chris’s wife and two kids also share a great appreciation for the outdoors and their free time is often centered around those activities.
